Nicaragua: IACHR highlights the critical situation facing Indigenous Peoples and Afro-descendants
Written by: Andrea Dip
Nicaragua has consolidated an authoritarian regime, with power concentrated in the executive branch, as well as impacts on the lives and territories of Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities. This is the finding of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) in its latest annual report, which devotes a chapter to analyzing the human rights situation in the Central American country.
The report documents the concentration of power, the shrinking of civic space, arbitrary detentions, transnational repression, and attacks on Indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples, among other issues. The IACHR details that these communities are facing armed attacks, targeted killings, and the detention of community leaders. You can read a summary of the findings in Spanish by Servini or the full report at OAS .)
