Peru: Gen Z vs. Dina Boluarte
Written by: Susanne Brust
By early October, the so-called Generation Z protests in Peru had built up such pressure that Congress removed President Dina Boluarte from office. Victims of oppression by the Boluarte government are calling for the politician to be imprisoned. But her successor, José Jerí of the conservative Christian Democratic Somos Peru party, who will take over the office on an interim basis until the elections in April 2026, is also a thorn in the side of the protesters. He faces accusations of rape and alleged corruption. He is also considered an ally of Boluarte and has appointed mainly pro-business and right-wing politicians to high government offices. In addition, he is also pursuing a hardline security policy and has already asked Congress for special powers to declare emergency measures to suppress the protests and undermine civil liberties, as reported by ak. The NPLA provides a more detailed analysis of the situation in Peru.
