Success in the recognition of same-sex marriages in Poland
Written by: Ulli Jentsch
In Poland, a legal battle concluded successfully in late April, forcing Polish authorities to recognize same-sex marriages contracted abroad. The court ordered the city of Lublin to recognize a marriage contracted by a Polish couple in Portugal. The ruling comes after several court decisions that have called on Poland to implement EU directives, as Notes from Poland reports. Shortly before that, more than 100 NGOs had criticized the Polish government under Donald Tusk for doing too little to implement EU standards in the country and for failing to take action in response to the court rulings.
