AfD MP Krah travels to Northern Cyprus despite a ban

In late August, Maximilian Krah (AfD) traveled to Northern Cyprus to hold political talks there. Unconfirmed media reports claimed that Krah was traveling “at the invitation of Parliament Speaker Ziya Öztürkler” (see cyprus.faq). The two AfD members of the Bundestag, Maximilian Krah and Achim Köhler, have been trying for months to travel to Northern Cyprus for a “parliamentary exchange.” This was most recently denied by the German Bundestag’s Human Rights Committee.
The self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is not internationally recognized, and therefore no parliamentary relations are maintained with it. According to a report in the far-right magazine 'Freilich', Krah reportedly met, among others, with representatives of the Turkish Cypriot Football Association as well as with “representatives of the Turkish Cypriot Municipalities Association.”
Contacts with Northern Cyprus were apparently also maintained during the session week of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in June 2026 in Strasbourg, France, by the AfD representative, Achim Köhler. Köhler refers to this in an Instagram post.
