AfD opposes the right to safe abortion

In the German Bundestag, the AfD parliamentary group regularly submits motions and inquiries aimed at undermining the work of queer, feminist, and gender-equality initiatives. In a recent motion titled “No Expansion of EU Social Policy into Areas of Healthcare,” the AfD calls on the federal government not to use funds from the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) “to finance abortions or related services.” This follows a resolution by the European Parliament in February 2026, which allows member states to use ESF+ funds “to improve equal access to legally available and affordable health services, including safe abortion services.” This is a result of the successful European Citizens’ Initiative “My Voice, My Choice: For Access to Safe Abortions.”

In another parliamentary document, the federal government responded to a comprehensive parliamentary question from the AfD parliamentary group regarding the “promotion of LGBTIQ and gender projects and abortion abroad.” While the question focused on support for the International Planned Parenthood Federation, it also raised issues concerning the funding of more than 120 initiatives in total. It is striking that the inquiry was apparently spearheaded by AfD members of parliament who have ties to the Trump movement and the U.S. government: Beatrix von Storch, Udo Hemmelgarn, and Malte Kaufmann. Early in its term, the Trump administration had already committed to not funding any measures or organizations that facilitate or advocate for abortion or other reproductive rights abroad (the so-called Global Gag Rule or Mexico City Rule). These draconian rules are among the standard demands of the global right, such as those of the Political Network for Values (PNfV), and their advocacy for the so-called Genoa Consensus Declaration, which the U.S. joined as early as January 2025.
