Geopolitics in the EU Parliament
Written by: Ulli Jentsch
An influential voice in foreign policy is that of AfD MEP Tomasz Froelich in Brussels. Froelich, who likes to be referred to as a “German-Polish politician,” became the first AfD member to take the stage at CPAC in Poland in May 2025 as a participant in a panel discussion. In Brussels, the foreign policy expert organizes roundtable discussions on the state of European geopolitics. At the end of January, Froelich, together with the Brussels Charlemagne Club, invited two speakers, David Engels and Robert Steuckers (both from Belgium). The topic was “Pro-Europeanism on the Right.” According to Froelich, the aim was to provide a serious, intellectual response from the right that goes beyond the false choice between left-wing federalism and Euroscepticism. Steuckers is a proven exponent of extreme right-wing Eurocentrism, which refers to a geopolitical axis between Paris, Berlin, and Moscow.
This was followed on February 6 by an event with Argentine Pablo Javier Davoli on the topic of Latin America and the new Monroe Doctrine, also in the European Parliament. Davoli was introduced as a “proven expert on geopolitics and constitutional law” who advises Argentine Vice President Victoria Villarruel. Froelich particularly noted the aspect of Davoli's thinking that emphasizes a so-called Hispanidad, a “connecting civilizational bond (...) more than a linguistic or historical commonality.” It represents “a cultural heritage that was carried from the Iberian Peninsula across the Atlantic to America, where it formed an independent civilization.”
