Success for the 'Venezuela Majority'

The European Parliament was also on summer break, but cooperation on the far right continues as before. The EU Commission under Ursula von der Leyen (CDU) and the Christian Democratic faction of the European People's Party (EPP) are repeatedly confronted with political initiatives as a result. The declared goal of the far right is to gain its own majorities with the EPP and thus undermine the centrist-liberal bloc.

A key focus is the dismantling of the European Green Deal. On 24 September, the Patriots for Europe (PfE) group jubilantly announced that it had broken through the “cordon sanitaire” – the European version of a firewall. In the ECON (Economic and Monetary Affairs) parliamentary committee, the report by its member Jorge Martín Frías (VOX) had been adopted ‘by a comfortable majority’. The report recommends exempting many small and medium-sized enterprises from Green Deal regulations. According to a press release, the PfE had shown that it was capable of forming a so-called “Venezuela Majority”, i.e. a majority alliance of far-right factions including the EPP. This majority had been formed for the first time during a vote in the European Parliament on the controversial elections in Venezuela in 2024.
