The Bundestag is traveling—with the AfD in attendance

Written by: Ulli Jentsch

In May and June 2026, committees and parliamentary groups of the German Bundestag seem to enjoy traveling; at any rate, we have already counted 22 trips abroad during these two months—and June has only just begun.

Events in which AfD members of parliament are participating include:

  • The German-Nordic Parliamentary Group conducted a fact-finding visit to Denmark, Greenland, and Iceland from May 27 to June 4.
  • The Committee on Culture and Media traveled to Warsaw from May 27 to 29 to discuss, among other topics, the politics of remembrance and cultural resilience.
  • The Cono Sur States Parliamentary Group visited Chile and Argentina from May 30 to June 7, led by Chairman Stefan Keuter of the AfD.
  • The important Budget Committee traveled to the United States from May 31 to June 6, 2026.

While the democratic parties in the Bundestag described the AfD’s trip to St. Petersburg as a security risk, at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Vilnius, Lithuania (May 29 till June 1, 2026), AfD Members of the Bundestag Gerold Otten, Hannes Gnauck, and Kurt Kleinschmidt were allowed to sit at the table and discuss the “political priorities of the Alliance.”

Kaufmann Meets the Pope

On May 15, AfD Member of the Bundestag Malte Kaufmann, as part of a parliamentary delegation to the OSCE in Rome, was granted an audience with the Pope. Kaufmann highlighted this in a video posted on Facebook from Rome. He claimed to have successfully conveyed to the Pope the AfD’s commitment to the Christian family. No AfD delegates were admitted to the Catholic Day taking place simultaneously in Würzburg, a decision that has been sharply criticized by the far right for years.
