MAGA - yeah or neh?

The disputes within the AfD and its affiliated circles over the proper relationship with the U.S. under the Trump administration continue. We have reported on this in recent newsletters. In her article “The German far right’s MAGA problem,” Laura Pitel, the Financial Times (FT) correspondent in Berlin, gives a voice to Benedikt Kaiser and his criticism of MAGA supporters, among others. According to Kaiser, the war with Iran has clearly demonstrated the dangers of aligning too closely with Trump: “This group within the German right that sees itself as an offshoot of MAGA has now been proven wrong,” the FT quotes the influential author Kaiser as saying.

Markus Frohnmaier, the AfD’s foreign policy spokesperson, comments in the article on whether the U.S. Republicans’ CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) should be brought to Germany, as George Weinberg (who just attended the BCC 2026 in Berlin) is planning for next year. Frohnmaier would rather establish a format of his own. At any CPAC conference in Europe, the U.S. national anthem would be played at the beginning, and they want to avoid giving the impression that they are following the U.S. too closely in terms of content.
