Italian right-wingers admitted to the IDU

Recently two Italian right-wing parties Fratelli d'Italia (FdI) under Prime Minister Meloni and Forza Italia (FI) under Foreign Minister Tajani were admitted to the International Democracy Union, the IDU. Why is this remarkable?

In the IDU, the two European party alliances EPP (CDU-dominated) and ECR (led by Giorgia Meloni) work together openly, while in the European Parliament there are repeated struggles to exclude the ECR. The ‚Berlin Campaign Conference‘ in the beginning of September (see before) was also dominated by the IDU.

From the German Union parties, David MacAllister (CDU MEP), Mario Voigt (party leader in Thuringia), Florian Hahn (CSU) and Michael Dust (chair of the youth organization IYDU) are involved in the IDU. The IDU unites more than 80 ‚center-right‘ parties worldwide. Christian Kremer, Head of the International Office at the CDU party headquarters, also took part in the last meeting. The IDU might play a key role in the normalization of extreme right-wing forces in Europe and worldwide and the German Union parties are significantly involved in this. The IDU headquarters are located at the CSU headquarters in Munich.

Just recently Giorgia Meloni met with Argentina’s President Javier Milei in Buenos Aires. Both reclaimed after the meeting that they are heading to build an alliance of ‚free nations that are united against tyranny and misery‘.
