Delcy Rodríguez on trips to India and Turkey

Interim President Delcy Rodríguez, who took office following the U.S. attack on Venezuela, visited India and Turkey in early June. During meetings with Indian President Narendra Modi and his foreign and petroleum ministers, the primary focus was on expanding Venezuela’s oil exports to India. Venezuela needs to expand its exports, in part to settle trade debts with India. For India, oil from Venezuela offers an opportunity to diversify its own oil sources in light of the war in Iran. The meetings also addressed, among other things, investment opportunities for Indian companies in Venezuela’s mining, raw materials, pharmaceutical, and automotive industries.

Delcy Rodríguez could more than count on the backing of U.S. President Trump during her visit: Indeed, the trip to India was initially announced not by the Venezuelan government itself, but by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Rodríguez also visited the U.S. ambassador to India and reported on the discussions held there. Another stop on the trip was a visit with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
