General strike in Ecuador
Escrito por: Ute Löhning
Ecuador has endured weeks of strikes and violent repression. In mid-September, following the cancellation of diesel subsidies, the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie) called for a general strike, and other grassroots organizations joined in. The police and military responded with brutal force. At least three indigenous people were killed, more than ten are considered missing, and hundreds were injured.
The government of Daniel Noboa, an oligarch from a banana dynasty, is relying on repression and the suspension of fundamental rights, following Bukele's line and promising to restore security as a result.
